IxDAHel x Aalto University: Emerging Interactive Technologies

The renowned interaction designers community, Interaction Design Association Helsinki (IxDA Helsinki), had their monthly meetup event in collaboration with HCI Helsinki at Aalto University on the 21st of May. The theme was “Emerging Interactive Technologies: What’s Coming up in 5 Years?” with topics in Body, Motion & Physicality; Algorithms & Future of Interaction Design; Symbiosis of Humans and Computers.

The speakers of the event shared their research topics in HCI and the technologies that enabled the interaction. Prof. Antti Oulasvirta presented on-skin devices and other kinds of unconventional interactions, and discussed his goals of building automatic interface creation and evaluation systems using mathematics. Tuomas Vaittinen shared their studies in exploring jogging behavior and the technologies that could increase users’ awareness of the environment. Dr. Raine Kajastila brought the audience to a new domain of audio/visually augmented exercise and sports training environment. Prof. Giulio Jacucci presented projects under the theme of Interactive Search Technology deploying various modality to not only improve efficiency but also enhance user experience. Last but not least, Dr. Eve Hoggan presented how she designs shape changing interface for the next generation, inspired by sea cucumbers.

The event ended with demos and discussions.


Prof. Antti Oulasvirta hosted the event and presented their latest research.


The venue was filled with enthusiastic HCI researchers and interaction design practitioners.
